NASA Captures First PHOTOS of 'Apocalypse Asteroid' Bennu That Can Strike Earth

Prior to NASA's OSIRIS-REx, the first spacecraft to bring back samples from an asteroid was Japan's Hayabusa back in 2010.

The space probe took the closeup using its NavCam 1 navigation camera, which it normally uses to track the path of its orbit.

The NASA OSIRIS-REx conveyed to Earth new images of the surface of asteroid Bennu, which was made from a record close distance to the surface of a celestial body.

Asteroid Bennu is a 500 metre-wide monster which earned its nickname because there's a very small chance of it hitting us.

"These two OpNav images of Bennu's southern hemisphere, which each have an exposure time of about 1.4 milliseconds, were captured January 17 from a distance of about one mile", NASA writes.

This image of Bennu was captured on January 17, 2019.

The images show the southern hemisphere of the asteroid. Recently this spacecraft had released some of the latest images of this asteroid.

Lazar Markovic completes permanent move to Fulham
The 24-year-old has departed the Reds for Craven Cottage, bringing his four-and-a-half-year spell with the club to an end. Liverpool have finally got Lazar Markovic off their hands as Fulham have signed the winger on a free transfer.

"Osiris was formed from pieces scattered across ancient Egypt, where he awoke as the bringer of life and ruler of the underworld", Dante Lauretta, the principal investigator for OSIRIS-REx, said in a statement released on NASA's website.

The images showcase Bennu's south pole in truly incredible detail as the initial surveys of the potentially Earth-bound asteroid continue.

OSIRIS-REx launched in 2016 with the goal of studying and collecting samples from an asteroid close to Earth.

The space probe aims to help scientists understand what makes up the asteroids that whiz past our planet.

If it succeeds, this will be the first USA -led asteroid sample-return mission. This will help the astronomical organization to determine more about this asteroid. Although there are plenty of images that the craft managed to capture successfully, however as of now NASA has released only two of these so far.

Los Alamos National Laboratory, which is famous for its work on the Manhattan Project and other ventures related to national security, intends to work with NASA to test asteroid deflection strategies.

So you may be surprised to see that a space rock called Bennu is much prettier than you'd imagine. While the push sunlight provides is tiny, it could build up over time and eventually change the path an asteroid travels.
