Tony Blair steps up warnings on 'irresponsible' no-deal Brexit

On Thursday - Valentine's Day - MPs will consider a motion on Brexit and a series of amendments, likely to include shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer's attempt to impose a new deadline for a vote on the deal.

Jeremy Corbyn has accused May of a "cynical" attempt to run down the clock before the March 29 Brexit date in order to leave MPs with a stark choice of accepting her deal or crashing out of the European Union without any agreement.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May leaves a church near High Wycombe, Britain February 10, 2019.

"If the meaningful vote has not happened - in other words, if things have not concluded - (then) parliament would have that further opportunity by no later than the 27th of February", he said.

He accused May of "pretending to make progress" over issues such as the Irish border so she could "run down the clock" to force MPs to choose between her deal and no deal.

If no agreement on changes to the backstop are reached by Wednesday Mrs May is set to ask for more time for negotiations and will table a motion for debate.

In early November 2018, former British PM Tony Blair called for a second referendum on Brexit, urging the country's parliament to turn down any divorce agreement between London and Brussels and let United Kingdom citizens decide as each option would have negative consequences.

As with January 29, if these are successful they could have a profound effect, giving lawmakers who want to block, delay or renegotiate Brexit a possible legal route to do so. However, EU leaders have remained adamant that the withdrawal agreement, which was signed if December, could not be reopened.

"I am not clear why you believe it would be preferable to seek a say in future European Union trade deals rather than the ability to strike our own deal?"

The former prime minister said departing the European Union without a negotiated agreement would inevitably see a "really hard border".

May and her government have repeatedly said membership of a customs union would prevent it having an independent trade policy - something they have promoted as one of the main economic benefits of leaving the EU.

The Speaker, John Bercow, will decide whether to select any of the amendments for a vote.

Before the debate begins, lawmakers will have to agree to the proposed timetable for the debate, now just one day.

But he confirmed a meaningful vote on whether to accept or reject a revised deal might not happen until March.

He pledged to give parliament a new vote on Britain's options by February 27 if May does not come back with new concessions before then.
