Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took a cheeky dig at rivals Liverpool ahead of Sunday's clash at Old Trafford by warning Manchester United can not be allowed to go as long without winning a league title.

Matic was a surprise omission from United's squad for their Premier League match against Liverpool on Sunday.

And Solskjaer says United must get back to the top of the domestic game quickly to ensure they do not treat a top-four finish as a success.

Matic has looked rusty in recent games, but since we don't have an adequate replacement, he'll likely start alongside them.

A crisp Liverpool move down the left ended with an Andrew Robertson cross that flashed through the penalty area, and United readied themselves for an early change, Alexis Sanchez warming up with Rashford limping.

"It's always going to be hard to get that first one".

Lingard pulled up in the dying embers of the first half after he almost put United in front, so Solskjaer was forced to bring on Sanchez, but a nervous Solskjaer looked on from the bench knowing he didn't really want to play the attacking figure.

"Man United have to match the energy and aggression of the Liverpool players. If they do that, they will win the match", he said.

"That's where I see Liverpool's strength - movement without the ball, aggression and repetition".

Liverpool had an opening in the first couple of minutes, David De Gea getting a hand to Ashley Young's backpass under pressure from Roberto Firmino to give away an indirect free kick, but James Milner's shot was blocked. I think all the supporters do and players probably do as well, but then we have not won it for a few years and so we want to get back to that.
