Three people were taken to the hospital following the emergency landing.

Flight 5763, which was being operated by Compass Airlines, was en route to Seattle from Orange County, California when they experienced "severe turbulence" and were forced to make an emergency landing in Nevada, Delta Airlines told PEOPLE in a statement.

Delta Airlines issued an apology after the flight landed. Five people were injured in total, Reno-Tahoe International Airport spokesman Brian Kulpin said. All passengers were conscious, he said.

The airline said: "We apologize for this experience as we get customers to Seattle". That flight was supposed to leave Reno around 5:30 p.m., but departure was moved back two hours. Customers were set to board an alternate flight to Seattle later in the day.

Passengers were delayed in Reno but were expected to arrive Wednesday night.

"I was sitting toward the back of the plane, so I saw the drink cart hit the ceiling, along with the flight attendant who was doing the drink service, and that. that was awesome just to see all that happening, and then you could see the people who aren't belted in".
