USA in direct contact with Venezuelan military, urging defections

The United States, along with allies Colombia and Brazil, are trying to bring aid into Venezuela, a move that Maduro says is a precursor to a USA invasion.

Elliot Abrams, the new USA envoy on the Venezuelan crisis, said that Washington was revoking the visas of an unspecified number of members of the Constituent Assembly.

US humanitarian aid destined for Venezuela is now sitting in a warehouse on the Colombian border.

Major European Union nations have joined the United States, Canada and a group of Latin American countries in recognising Guaido as interim ruler.

He said the aid offer was "a message of humiliation for the people".

Mr Pouyanne continued: "We made a decision to evacuate all of our personnel from Venezuela given the current situation" adding that the evacuation process had begun more than a week ago.

The same day, Reuters reported that the United Nations warned against "politicizing humanitarian aid in Venezuela".

The US, EU and many Latin American countries branded it a fraud as prominent opposition leaders were unable to stand after being exiled, jailed or barred.

Toledo also said that more points of aid were going to be established in countries neighbouring Venezuela soon, to speed up aid delivery into the country.

On January 23, Guaido, the president of the National Assembly, used an obscure part of the Venezuelan constitution to declare himself interim president.

Soaring hyperinflation has forced millions of Venezuelans to flee or go hungry as they struggle to find or afford basic goods and medicine.

But a USA military intervention in Venezuela could fracture support from Latin American counties that have been critical of past US interventions in the region and could bolster Maduro's image in Venezuela as a sympathetic and anti-imperialist leader.

Two dozen nations, including the USA and some of Latin America's biggest countries, have recognised opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's interim president, while China and Russian Federation are backing Maduro.

A number of countries, including the United States, have accused Maduro of stealing the election.

While the 35-year-old has the support of powerful western nations, other global powers such as Russia, China and Turkey continue to back the Maduro regime and have denounced what they call foreign meddling in Venezuela's internal affairs.

Venezuela's Constituent Assembly was established by Maduro in 2017 to replace the country's opposition-controlled National Assembly. But Maduro has refused calls for him to step down, insisting Washington is orchestrating a coup against his government.

General Francisco Yanez of the air force's high command became the first active Venezuelan general to recognise Guaido, but he is one of about 2,000 generals.

Guaido identified the three collection points for worldwide humanitarian aid as the Brazil-Venezuela border, an as-of-yet unidentified Caribbean island, and Cucuta.

USAID has begun packaging pallets of foodstuffs after Bolton's announcement last week that it would send humanitarian aid.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas also said Germany had earmarked €5 million ($5.72 million) worth of assistance for Venezuela.
