Washington Capitals acquire forward Carl Hagelin from Kings

Hagelin will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

The Kings will retain 50 percent of Hagelin's remaining salary, according to the Washington Post's Isabelle Khurshudyan.

The Kings, who got Hagelin for Tanner Pearson in November, receive a 2019 third-round pick and a 2020 conditional sixth-round selection from Washington. He was part of the Penguins" back-to-back Stanley Cup wins in 2016 and "17.

Hagelin has just two goals and six assists in 38 games this season with Pittsburgh and Los Angeles.

Hagelin will join his new teammates in Buffalo tomorrow and will make his Caps debut on Saturday afternoon against the Sabres. I like to play with him.

The teams announced the trade Thursday after Washington winger Devante Smith-Pelly cleared waivers and was assigned to Hershey of the American Hockey League. The winger has seven goals and 16 points in 75 games last season. He hadn't scored a goal in 33 games.

Adding Hagelin checks off the one thing General Manager Brian MacLellan said was on his wish list earlier this month. Coach Todd Reirden said the team had initially planned to waive Dmitrij Jaskin but changed their mind in anticipation of Monday's trade deadline. Considering he was almost moved Wednesday, he acknowledged that his future is dicey until Monday.

"He had a good impact on us, especially on me", Kempe said.
