Tom Hanks Narrates WaPo Super Bowl Ad Promoting Journalists’ ‘Larger Importance to Society’

The glossy commercial, narrated by Hollywood A-lister Tom Hanks, delivers "a message underscoring the importance of news-gathering and the dangers journalists can face", the Post maintains.

If you are watching Super Bowl LIII tonight, and do so through the fourth quarter of what is predicted to be a close game, then you will see a commercial from the Washington Post.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who wrote critically about the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October, likely at the orders of the young but powerful royal.

The Washington Post is facing stiff resistance from the paper's union head for purchasing what some believe could be a $10 million Super Bowl ad extolling the virtues of journalism in a functioning democracy. "While most Super Bowl ad producers have the better part of a year, we had the lesser part of a week, but with an event this big, we chose to seize the opportunity to make this a milestone moment in our ongoing campaign to highlight reporters' work and the importance of press freedom".

Images from the scene showed flames engulfing the two homes and residents rushing to the scene. He said both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate.

According to The Washington Post, the commercial shows scenes from major news events from World War II through the present day, ending with the publication's logo and its slogan, "Democracy Dies in Darkness".

While the publication declined to reveal how much it is paying for the 60-second slot, a CNBC report said CBS is charging a record $5.25m for a 30-second slot.

Analysts say the latest Super Bowl ads are part of a broader trend where brands are promoting their social values.
