Another highlight, of course, is the arrival of YouTube Premium, which offers an ad-free viewing experience - among other things like background and offline playback.

With the launch, India's music and video streaming space has become even more crowded.

Today, YouTube has finally announced the launch of its music streaming service, YouTube Music (ad-supported), in India.

"India is where the multi-lingual music scene thrives".

The "made-for-music" app and web player offers official songs, albums, thousands of playlists and artist radio from Indian and worldwide artists, as well as access to YouTube's tremendous catalog of remixes, live performances, covers and music videos that aren't available anywhere else. Gaana is now the market leader in India with over 80 million monthly users as of December 2018, as per industry estimates. "With YouTube Music, we are hoping to bring the best in global and Indian music to millions of fans across India, and give them an immersive music experience, with the magic of music on YouTube", said the Global Head of Music, Lyor Cohen on the launch of YouTube Music in India. To be sure, Hungama has been offering music videos on its app for a while and Gaana, which is now offering embedded YouTube videos on its app, is also planning to launch its own video library, according to a report by online publication, The Ken.

The internet giant will also look to move the paid subscribers of Google Play Music to YouTube Music, although it didn't disclose any specific timeline for this shift. "Music from India has always been so much more than just the audio".

To get started, visit youtube.com/musicpremium, or download the YouTube Music app for Android and iOS. The home screen welcomes you with "recommended music videos", "live performances" and other categories. There is also a good recommendations engine that starts throwing up music you are likely to like based on what you have already listened to.

The Hotlist section shows you the latest and trending content. Google claims the application has thousands of playlists across genre, mood, and activity.

An AI search feature will let you search for songs using descriptions and lyrics, which should make for a very interesting experience. "We have seen explosive amount of growth in terms of consumption in India over last two years and I think it will be missed opportunity if we dont bring YouTube music experience or delay any further", You Tube Director of Product Management for Music Products T Jay Fowler told PTI.

Users can also download their favorite tracks. Their Offline Mixtape will also automatically download up to 100 songs they love onto their mobile device. This is available on a free three-month trial.

All of this will be curated on your home screen. There will also be a paid version of the app, YouTube Music Premium for Rs 99 per month, that will allow users to play songs and videos in the background, while they toggle between apps, write a text message or lock their phone during a run. Additionally, the paid subscribers will also get offline downloads. Here's how YouTube Music and YouTube Premium differ.
