"There were like six shots, and then there were three more", one witness told the Daily News. The man was on the ground face-up.

United States media reported that Cali's death marked the first murder of a NY mob boss in 34 years, since the death of Paul Castellano - another Gambino family boss - by order of the infamous John Gotti, also known as Teflon Don. The Post had reported last September that sources said that after Cali ascended to power, he centered on the heroin and Oxycontin trade. In 2013 his son, former Gambino boss John A. Gotti, was stabbed in the stomach in Syosset, New York.

New York's major crime families, the Gambinos, the Luccheses, the Genoveses, the Bonannos and the Colombos, have seen some decline over the past few decades, as federal law enforcement agencies have tried to extricate their influence from construction and other major industries.

Charges against members of Mafia operations, including Gambino family operatives, have included murder, loan sharking, gambling and illegal drug distribution, Reuters has reported.

In 1985, Gambino "capo" John Gotti orchestrated the murder of Castellano to become the most publicized boss of the family. Gotti, who then assumed control of the family, reportedly watched the action from nearby with his eventual underboss, Sammy "Bull" Gravano.

Since the 1990s, the fortunes of the city's five traditional mafia clans have been on the decline.

Cali was believed to have been elevated to the position of acting boss in 2015, taking over from Domenico "Greaseball" Cefalu. The Daily Beast noted, "Cali's home is a two-minute drive from where one of his predecessors, late Gambino boss Paul Castellano, lived in an ostentatious mansion dubbed the White House until he was executed outside Sparks Steak House in Manhattan in 1985".
