Angry over Brexit delay, 'Leave' supporters march through London

The vote leaves the United Kingdom closer to a possible "crash out" of the European Union on April 12 with no deal in place - risking a dramatic impact on the British economy. The DUP has been bitterly opposed to the backstop provision in the agreement which is supposed to ensure there is no hard Irish border by keeping Northern Ireland closely tied to European Union regulations after Brexit.

The Prime Minister may now seek another, longer extension to Britain's exit from the European Union, but it isn't clear if May will be allowed to remain in power long enough to continue driving the process - not that a new general election would bring any near-term certainty to the Brexit fiasco.

Britain now has under two weeks to convince the 27 capitals of the European Union that it has an alternative path out of the impasse, or see itself cast out of the bloc on April 12 with no deal on post-Brexit ties with its largest trading ally.

Isabel Oakeshott, a Brexit-supporting journalist, tweeted Friday that she welcomed a potential British European Parliament vote on these grounds.

Ms. May had been hoping that her decision to hold a vote only on the 600-page withdrawal agreement, which is one part of her overall Brexit deal, would have been enough to sway critics.

Nearly three years after the Brexit referendum on June 23, 2016, the British government and Parliament still seem to be at a loss over what they really want from the EU.

With no majority in parliament for any Brexit plan so far, it is unclear what May will now do. "And today it has rejected approving the withdrawal agreement alone and continuing a process on the future".

European Council President Donald Tusk.

Mrs May said it "should be a matter of profound regret to every member of this House that once again we have been unable to support leaving the European Union in an orderly fashion".

Voters are divided, many of them anxious and angry, and May blames MPs - but they in turn accuse her of refusing to countenance any alternative to her unpopular deal. "A "no-deal" scenario on 12 April is now a likely scenario".

She appealed to Brexit supporters to back her, saying that under the delay plan hatched with Brussels, approval on Friday could see Britain out of the bloc on 22 May.

Meanwhile, Scottish Labour leader Richard Leonard said: "Theresa May's deal is dead and with Parliament in deadlock we simply must have a general election".

But others refused, including May's Northern Irish allies, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which says planned arrangements for the Irish border after Brexit are unacceptable.

Sterling had been mostly stronger against both the dollar and the euro in the runup to the vote, but then fell to its lowest point against the greenback in more than two weeks within moments of the count.

An EU supporter carries a child on his shoulders, calling on the government to give Britons a vote on the final Brexit deal, as they participate in the "People's Vote" march in central London.

"There's a need now to think of businesses, to think of jobs". In a political U-turn, leading Brexiteers such as Jacob Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson have said they will now vote for the deal.

"I encourage all MPs to support it and ensure that we leave the European Union... giving people and businesses the certainty they need".
