Apple faces antitrust action in EU

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek

The executive says that when it comes to Apple Music and the App Store, the company gives itself an unfair advantage, violating EC antitrust regulations.

Ek points to the revenue share that Apple demands for services that charge customers via apps distributed through the App Store, unofficially known as the "Apple tax". Ek says that Apple does this through the "Apple Tax".

Spotify wasn't looking for special treatment, but "we should all be subject to the same fair set of rules and restrictions - including Apple Music", Ek said. If Spotify chooses not to use the payment system and avoid the 30 percent charge, Ek said, Apple can complicate matters for Spotify, such as limiting its ability to communicate with customers or blocking upgrades.

A spokesman for the European Commission said that it had received a complaint from Spotify and is assessing it under standard procedures.

Breitbart News will keep readers updated on this issue as the story develops.

Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

And which long shots stun the golfing world? He had an absolutely brutal 2nd round at the Honda Classic to miss the weekend. That Woods has turned to a coach shouldn't come as a surprise given his performance on the greens in his last two starts.

Spotify is also concerned that the company has been "locking Spotify and other competitors out of Apple services such as Siri, HomePod and Apple Watch", wrote Mr Ek.

However, Ek said he has now been forced to officially lodge a complaint with the European commission after Apple introduced what he claimed were wider anti-competitive practices that has made it "both player and referee to deliberately disadvantage other app developers".

Under App store rules, Spotify said, content-based apps could not include buttons or external links to pages with production information, discounts or promotions and faced difficulties fixing bugs. The streaming music service announced its "Time to Play Fair" campaign today, accusing Apple of, among other things, regularly changing the rules for iOS developers in ways that disadvantage rivals.

Second, consumers should have a real choice of payment systems, and not be "locked in" or forced to use systems with discriminatory tariffs such as Apple's.

As I recently shared, competition pushes us to evolve and improve both the customer and creator experience.

The primary issues here are the 30 percent cut that Apple takes from nearly every transaction that goes through its system, and the alleged preferential treatment that Apple gives to its first-party streaming option (and direct competitor to Spotify), Apple Music. It is about supporting and nurturing the healthy ecosystem that made our two companies successful in the first place. That's what competition on the merits is all about.
