It's been a little over a week since a report about Apple's augmented reality plans crossed our radar, which means today's report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is actually slightly overdue. That's essentially the worst case scenario right now, with the veteran analyst suggesting manufacturing operations could even be underway as early as this year, which would all but guarantee a commercial rollout in 2020.

In fact, Apple started to collect AR-related tech as early as 2013, when it bought PrimeSense, the company that developed the software for the Kinect 3D depth sensor and now powers FaceID and Animoji.

Moreover, the new glasses were also previously tipped to offer an 8K resolution for each eye, which is not just beyond what existing Apple hardware can handle but also a lot more than the resolution provided by other AR and VR headsets in the market. It's hard to imagine the company releasing a headset like those made by HTC Vive, Oculus, and their counterparts.

Requiring an iOS device to drive the glasses is a clever move.

Apple has apparently been betting on augmented reality for a considerable period and it allegedly also has a separate covert unit that works on the two nascent technologies. It also might not be such a bad idea to release a tethered headset first for a number of reasons, the most important of which are production and production costs. Eventually, the device will operate independently from smartphones or computers. Looking to the future, a 5G phone (also rumored to be coming from Apple in 2020) combined with 5G smart glasses would be a pretty powerful combination. However, we do trust Apple to sort out these issues before launching the headsets.

In its walk-up to an AR headset, Apple has been offering opportunities for developers to build AR apps through its ARKit platform.
