Muilenburg said a software upgrade for the 737 MAX aircraft that the planemaker started in the wake of October's deadly Lion Air crash in Indonesia was coming "soon".

"During the verification process of the FDR data, clear similarities were noted by the investigation team between Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 and Lion Air Flight 610, which will be the subject of further study during the investigation", the BEA said.

The black boxes of the Ethiopian Airlines jet that crashed with the loss of 157 lives recently have been read successfully, French accident investigators said on Monday.

Boeing has apologised to customers for the challenges they've experienced since the grounding of their fleet across the globe.

The Boeing leadership is taking steps to ensure the complete safety of its 737 MAX series based on the findings as part of probes into Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines crashes, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said in a statement.

The SA Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), like the US FAA, did not order the grounding of this aircraft model as a precaution immediately after the Ethiopian Airlines crash.

The US, which is ratcheting up pressure on Germany and several other governments in the West to not allow China's Huawei to provide 5G mobile-internet infrastructure because of alleged security concerns, is now facing a global backlash against the American commercial airplanes major following two deadly crashes of the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft in the past six months.

In South Africa, meanwhile, there is still not an official airworthiness directive on the SACAA website to make it mandatory to ground all MAX 8s.

The 2012 investigation also found that discord over Boeing's treatment had created a "negative work environment" among FAA staff who approve new and modified designs, with many saying they'd faced retaliation for speaking up.
