Chelsea left 'astonished' as Federation Internationale de Football Association refuse request to delay transfer ban

Chelsea was banned from registering new players for two transfer periods - after this season and January 2020 - for breaking rules created to protect teenage players.

Chelsea have been left "astonished" after FIFA's Appeal Committee refused to postpone their transfer ban whilst they appeal punishment.

So what next for the club?

Chelsea could now ask the Court of Arbitration for Sport to grant an interim ruling, which would allow players to be signed in the summer.

However, the club does have a simply staggering 41 players out on-loan, so they're not exactly short of options, including the likes of Alvaro Morata (Atletico Madrid), Tammy Abraham (Aston Villa), Michy Batshuayi (Crystal Palace), and Tiemoue Bakayoko (AC Milan).

As a result of this outcome, Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea will not be able to enjoy such a spending spree, with FIFA's ruling leaving Chelsea unable to sign any new players until the summer of 2020.

The Premier League side were also fined more than £460,000, while the FA face a £390,000 sanction that they will also appeal, citing "concerns" with FIFA's disciplinary processes.

The west London club were found guilty of 29 incidences of breaching article 19, which relates to the transfer of players aged under 18.

'As a matter of procedural fairness and equality of treatment, and Swiss law, the club's right to an appeal process must be afforded, before any irremediable sanction takes effect.

But Fifa says it has denied measures which would see the transfer ban frozen during the appeal process.

"Chelsea considers that it is being treated inconsistently in comparison with other European clubs", the statement said.

Federation Internationale de Football Association have since appointed Thomas Bodstrom as chairman of their Appeals Committee and it seems the former AIK Stockholm defender, who was Uma Thurman's personal lawyer, has ruled against the organisations precedent. In the meantime the club will continue to fully cooperate with the proceedings'.

Traore, who has signed moved to French club Lyon, signed his first professional contract at Chelsea in 2013 at the age of 18 but was not registered until January the following.

It has been alleged that deal was for four and a half years, despite the limit for under-18s being three years.
