E-cigarettes linked to depression, poor heart

Vaping'Significantly Increases Your Heart Attack Risk Biggest Ever Study

After adjustment for smoking, age, sex, BMI, cholesterol, and hypertension, odds ratios for MI were 1.34 for daily vapers (95% CI 1.070-1.678) and 1.252 for use on some days (95% CI 1.001-1.567) compared with no e-cigarette use.

"Until today, the effects of electronic cigarette use on the heart and veins were not known much".

The study is one of the largest to date looking at the relationship between e-cigarette use and health outcomes, using data from 96,467 people.

But taking into account the fact that people who were also regularly smoking tobacco had a 165 per cent increased heart attack risk, they calculated the increased isk of vaping alone dropped to about 34 per cent. Now, researchers are calling e-cigarettes a cardiovascular risk.

The study, which involved 96,467 e-cigarette users from the United States, also compared data for reported tobacco smokers and non-smokers.

Daily users generally had higher risk point estimates than those who vaped on some days, but the MI risk was significant for both, said Mohinder Vindhyal, MD, of the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita, at a press briefing ahead of presentation at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) meeting in New Orleans.

They were also 55 percent more likely to suffer from depression or anxiety. One study showed that using e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool had twice the abstinence rate from tobacco cigarettes than those who used nicotine-replacement products.

Personal correspondence between Einstein and his lifelong friend and fellow scientist Michele Besso show his more humanistic side. In his will, Einstein bequeathed his personal and professional writings to the university, of which he was one of the founders.

E-cigarettes have exploded in popularity, with sales increased 14-fold since 2007, according to the study.

The average e-cigarette smoker in the study was age 33, but a growing number of younger users have started to take up the habit.

Maciej Goniewicz, PharmD, PhD, of Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York, who has studied e-cigarettes' respiratory effects, seconded the importance of so-called dual use in interpreting the findings. "Stroke, high blood pressure and circulatory problems were no longer statistically different between the two groups".

"Cigarette smoking carries a much higher probability of heart attack and stroke than e-cigarettes, but that doesn't mean that vaping is safe", added Dr Vindhyal said, adding that some e-cigarettes release toxic compounds.

For the study, which will be presented next week at the American College of Cardiology, researchers examined the responses of almost 100,000 people in 2014, 2016 and 2017. Further longitudinal data is needed.

Yet the latest study into the health implications of using e-cigarettes does not bode well.

The American College of Cardiology envisions a world where innovation and knowledge optimize cardiovascular care and outcomes. The ACC bestows credentials upon cardiovascular professionals who meet stringent qualifications and leads in the formation of health policy, standards and guidelines.
