Flights were suspended at London's Stansted airport after an Airbus A320 plane suffered an engine failure and the flight was aborted on the runway during takeoff, a spokesman for the airport said.

One passenger, Sam Long, wrote on Twitter that there was a "loud bang" as the plane began to accelerate and take off, followed by "huge deceleration".

The estate agent, 24, from Essex, said: "It was scary". And then staff shouting ´evacuate evacuate´. "A few old people fell over and the fire brigade treated them".

Stansted airport said the incident had been caused by a "suspected engine problem", adding: "Emergency service attended and all passengers were evacuated from the aircraft as a precaution and have now been taken back to the terminal".

"No-one was seriously injured just minor things".

FLIGHTS at London Stansted Airport have been grounded or diverted due to "an incident on the runway" according to reports.

The airport tweeted at 10.40pm: "Our runway has now re-opened and is fully operational".

"The safety of our passengers is our top priority and we're working closely with our airlines to ensure affected passengers are looked after".

The plane was removed from the runway shortly before 22:00 and an inspection was undertaken before flights resumed.
