Some users are encountering a message that indicates the site is now down for maintenance.

Direct messages on Facebook and Instagram appeared to be largely unaffected.

Facebook did send a message on Twitter acknowledging the problems: "We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".

Facebook and Instagram experienced outages around the world on Wednesday. Some users saw a message, saying Facebook was down for "required maintenance".

It was unclear when the issue might be resolved. While they have not publically identified the problem, they do say that it is not a dedicated denial of service attack. "Facebook Workplace is our only channel for [communication] with the exception of email". In its live outage map, it shows that the Facebook outage is being primarily experienced in the US and Western Europe.

Sao Paulo school shooting: 8 children and two adult killed in Brazil
Doria said the school had been evacuated and police were inspecting what appeared to be possible explosives left by the shooters. The attack was carried out by two " armed and hooded " teenagers, according to police. "I heard a lot of screaming", she said.

"I figured this could happen eventually but it's extremely crippling to be part of this monopoly".

The outage includes Oculus, Facebook's virtual reality company and Workplace, its corporate comunications software. The hashtag, #InstagramDown, is also trending on Twitter. Individual users have been able to post sporadically throughout the outage. Additionally, Instagram wouldn't redirect to other people's pages.

Social media fiends are in a panic as popular social media apps hit the skids.

Some joked that the lack of access to Facebook would deprive them of validation.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
