A spokesperson from the company reportedly said many of Zuckerberg's old posts about Facebook can still be found on the company's blog and in its newsroom.

Facebook has drawn fire over all four, from hate speech on the platform and the recent live streaming of attacks on mosques in New Zealand, to its use in foreign efforts to meddle in elections and concerns over its collection of personal user data.

Zuckerberg also called for updated legislation focused on protecting elections, including new rules aimed at online political advertising that "reflect the reality of the threats" faced by social media companies.

"We have a responsibility to keep people safe on our services", he said. "But if we were starting from scratch, we wouldn't ask companies to make these judgments alone".

"Lawmakers often tell me we have too much power over speech, and frankly I agree".

Mark Zuckerberg has called for tech companies to be more strictly regulated across the world, laying out the most detailed vision yet of how Facebook believes it should be governed.

He said privacy rules such as the General Data Protection Regulation, which took effect in Europe past year, should be adopted elsewhere in the world. "And the Internet and especially social media sites now need to be looked at closer by government entities".

Facebook has weathered more than two years of turbulence for repeated privacy lapses, spreading disinformation, allowing Russian agents to conduct targeted propaganda campaigns and a rising tide of hate speech and abuse.

Privacy regulations "should protect your right to choose how your information is used - while enabling companies to use information for safety purposes and to provide services", he said.
