In the third quarter of 2018, apps in Google Play generated around $6.2 billion in revenue worldwide, according to data from Sensor Tower.

This practice is already a common way for developers to profit when gamers don't want to pay real cash, but as an official Google Play offering, Rewarded Products should make life easier for developers.

For developers out there, the new Rewarded Products format is now available in open beta through the Google Play Console.

From an everyday user's standpoint, this product could be seen as convenient. or a major pain in the behind. Sensor Tower's data shows that subscriptions were growing revenues in both marketplaces, but developers are increasingly using multiple methods to monetize their apps and games, as Google notes.

Of course, others are likely to jump at the opportunity of wasting a few seconds to gain in-game currency or other perks without actually spending any money.

Writing in an Android Developers Blog post, Patrick Davis, Product Manager at Google Play, explains "Our first rewarded product offering will be in a video format".
