Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg nominated for Norway's Nobel Peace Prize

A Swedish schoolgirl climate change campaigner has been put forward for the Nobel Peace Prize by three Norwegian socialists.

If she were to win, she would be the youngest recipient since Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai, who was 17 when she received the prize.

"We are only seeing the beginning", Thunberg, now 16, tweeted recently.

Freddy Andre Oevstegaard and two other members of the Socialist Left Party said they believe "the massive movement Greta has set in motion is a very important peace contribution".

"Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement which I see as a major contribution to peace", he added.

On Friday, thousands of students are expected to demonstrate in more than 100 countries in what activists say could be a milestone moment in a grassroots campaign to push world leaders into doing more.

The Nobel prizes are awarded each year on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of the death of its founder Alfred Nobel, in a double ceremony: at the Oslo City Hall in Norway, for the Peace Prize, and in the Konserthus in Stockholm, Sweden, for the other five awards. Her strikes inspired last year's Strike 4 Climate Action, which saw Aussie students take to the streets around the nation.

Since then, she has been missing lessons most Fridays to stage her regular protests.

The Nobel Peace Prize a year ago went to Congo's Denis Mukwege and Iraq's Nadia Murad for "their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict", according to the Nobel Committee's ruling.

National politicians, worldwide officials, academics and previous winners are among those who can nominate potential recipients.

The list of nominees is kept secret for at least 50 years, in line with the Nobel Foundation's statutes.
