House Dems Will Vote On Resolution Addressing Omar's Latest Remarks On Israel

'I'm anti-occupation, not anti-Semitic': Ilhan Omar spars with fellow Democrat over Israel

Politico reports that Democratic leaders have been hard at work since last week, trying to figure out a way to openly criticize remarks made by Omar - at an event last week in Washington, D.C. - and by others, who have adopted centuries old anti-Semitic tropes, like the "dual loyalty" smear, to critique their colleagues.

But Omar fought back against her fellow congresswoman, defending her comments in series of tweets.

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan A. Greenblatt wrote a letter Monday to Pelosi requesting the House vote on a resolution rejecting Omar's "latest slur and make clear that no matter what may divide the 435 members of the House of Representatives, they are united in condemning anti-Semitism".

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, declined to comment. "Sometimes referred to as the "dual-loyalty" charge, it alleges that Jews should be suspected of being disloyal neighbors or citizens because their true allegiance is to their co-religionists around the world or to a secret and immoral Jewish agenda".

"We hope you will continue to demonstrate your commitment to the high moral standards of your office by removing Rep. Omar, a woman who has repeatedly exhibited strong biases against the State of Israel and the Jewish people, from this critically important and sensitive committee", said the letter.

"If anything, it should remind someone how hurtful such hateful stereotypes can be", he said.

Omar's problem on the House Foreign Affairs Committee extend beyond her comments and into her affiliation with groups directly connected to terrorism.

"Lawmakers must be able to debate without prejudice or bigotry", Lowey tweeted.

Giants' Saquon Barkley feels Trace McSorley was disrespected at NFL Combine
National Football League teams can make requests for players to work at other positions during the combine. The request was met with disbelief by one of McSorley's former Nittany Lions teammates.

"Rep. Omar has argued that these statements reflect good faith disagreements about US policy toward Israel, the Palestinian Authority and the relationship between the two", he said. "I urge her to retract this statement and engage in further dialogue with the Jewish community on why these comments are so hurtful".

The remarks drew the ire of two senior House Democrats from New York: Appropriations Committee chairwoman Nita Lowey and Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Elliot Engel.

Democratic House Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) has reportedly already received a copy of the draft, but there's still one sticking point: whether Democrats will mention Omar by name in the resolution. To the left of Omar is Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida. The freshman member of Congress took to Twitter on Sunday afternoon to say that she is critical of the Israeli government, and its prime minister, but that she is no anti-Semite.

On Saturday, Lowey accused Omar of continuing to "mischaracterize" support for Israel from USA lawmakers.

"Our democracy is built on debate, Congresswoman!"

'I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committee, ' she tweeted, adding later that 'I am told everyday that I am anti-American if I am not pro-Israel.

Lowey responded in kind.
