Trump ‘Ordered’ John Kelly to Grant Jared Kushner a Top-Secret Security Clearance: Report

Career security officials had recommended against granting a clearance to Kushner, the president's son-in-law.

Elijah Cummings (D-MD) sent a letter to Counsel to the President Pat Cipollone, expressing his frustration over the matter in light of a New York Times report that said that Trump has spoken falsely about this process in the past.

Cummings then warned that the letter will be the final time he requests voluntary cooperation with the investigation.

Kushner held an interim clearance for much of the first year he worked in the White House.

Cummings' frustration with the lack of response was clear in his Friday letter.

Cummings said that after the first time he asked for information, Cipollone's office "seemed to completely disregard" a January 23 letter that laid out why the Oversight Committee was investigating the matter.

According to the Times, the president's move in May "so troubled senior administration officials that at least one, the White House chief of staff at the time, John F. Kelly, wrote a contemporaneous internal memo about how he had been "ordered" to give Mr. Kushner the top-secret clearance".

He said Thursday's report, published by The New York Times, added new concerns that Trump was lying to the public about his role in the clearance process to existing and broader questions about irregularities surrounding who should have access to sensitive government secrets. He had struggled to obtain even his top-secret clearance, in part because of his contacts with certain foreign government officials, The Post previously reported.

David Beckham: LA Galaxy unveil statue before MLS season opener
The LA Galaxy unveiled a statue of David Beckham ahead of the club's 2019 Major League Soccer season opener on Saturday night. In addition to the field, a mural featuring Beckham's time as a member of the LA Galaxy accompanied the project.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, weighed in on the controversy Friday.

The Times notes that only in "highly unusual cases" does the president weigh in to grant a topsecret security clearance. "That's why I've teamed up with Sen".

AFP, Washington The US Navy's version of the F-35 stealth fighter jet is "ready for combat", officials said Thursday, marking another milestone in the development of the most expensive weapons program ever. And it is highly troubling that Trump would go to these lengths for his son-in-law, who has no qualifications to speak of - let alone that he and his daughter Ivanka would lie about it to reporters. Kushner was granted permanent security clearance in May after a year of background checks. Indeed, Democrats on Capitol Hill are also now questioning why Kushner had such trouble attaining that status. McGahn also wrote a memo, according to the report.

"To date, the White House has not produced a single document or scheduled a single interview", Cummings said in a statement. When the White House ignored the requests, however, Gowdy refused Cummings' pleas to subpoena the information.

Cummings gave the White House until Monday to respond to his latest demands.

The subject of Kushner's security clearance has long plagued the White House and been a source of scrutiny for members of Congress.

He was then granted a full, top-secret clearance in May.

While the exact obstacles Kushner encountered in his clearance process are not publicly known, officials privately raised concerns over ties between Kushner and his family's real estate company and foreign investors and entities. That list includes Kushner as well as national security adviser John Bolton, his predecessor Michael Flynn and his son, and Sebastian Gorka.
