The Spaniard's right knee flared up in the second set of his 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2) victory over Karen Khachanov in Friday's quarter-finals.

The 37-year has eased through the draw without dropping a set and having made history by joining Jimmy Connors in the 100 club with his title success in Dubai a couple of weeks ago - he is on track for 101 when he faces either Raonic or Thiem in Sunday's final.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are set to face off in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells on Saturday, March 16.

"The way we go about it is very different, yet we both find a way to excel", Federer said.

Nadal and Federer have faced each other 38 times across their career with the Spaniard leading the head-to-head 23-15.

Meanwhile, when asked about the court action to be taken against the suspects, Dr Mahathir said there must be strong evidence before the prosecution can begin their case.

The Swiss great has won the last five in the series, but says that's of little significance now that it has been nearly a year and a half since their last meeting in the Shanghai Masters final in October 2017.

His run at the first Grand Slam of the year marked his return to competition for the first time since a similar knee problem forced him to retire from his US Open semi-final against Juan Martin del Potro in September.

Nadal, who has struggled with knee injuries throughout his stellar career, was the second high-profile player to withdraw from the tournament. He didn't play again until the Australian Open, where he fell in the championship match to Novak Djokovic.

Federer said he might not feel quite the same tingle of anticipation as fans at the prospect of facing Nadal, but he acknowledged that their clashes always raise the stakes.

"Nobody can guarantee anything about what can happen the next day, but of course my goal is to be ready for tomorrow". "I can not guarantee how I'm going to wake up tomorrow morning".
