Jason Cook, Battalion Chief for Layton City Fire, told ABC 4 News that the child was wearing a sock on his hand when he reached over to play with the dogs before one of them bit into his arm just below the wrist.

A dog has bitten off the hand of a four-year-old boy after he stuck his arm underneath a fence to try to play with the animal.

After assessing the boy's injuries, a helicopter flew him to a hospital in Salt Lake City.

Crews were called to the scene in Layton, Utah at about 3:45 p.m. Authorities are still looking for the boy's limb. The husky bit off the boy's entire hand and 2 to 3 inches of his arm, Cook said.

The boy's injury came as a shock to the owner of the huskies as it was the dog's "first bite incident", Cook explained.

The boy's father tried to limit the bleeding and comfort his son until emergency workers arrived.

"We looked through the entirety of the backyard and through the home".

Cook said that there has never been a problem with the pets before, adding this was the most severe case of a dog biting a person he had ever seen.

Although only one husky was involved, both dogs were taken by Davis County Animal Control, Fox 10 reported.

Cook says it's a tragic situation since the child was playing in his backyard as many children do, and the next door neighbor had their dogs contained.

Neighbor Stacy Taft watched in horror as the tragedy played out.

"No parent wants to go through that". 'They don't want to see that kind of stuff happen and to not be able to stop it'.

The breed is generally thought to be friendly, alert and gentle, and are not typically possessive or suspicious of strangers, according to the American Kennel Club.

The owners of the dogs said neither animal had an aggressive history. Larger Alaskan Malamutes tend to have similar, loyal personalities.
