Indian Premier League 2019: Warner-Bairstow show steals the thunder from Samson

Sanju Samson became only the fourth Indian batsman to score more than one IPL hundred

Earlier, Rajasthan Royals opted to bat and leg-spinner Rashid Khan struck the first big blow when he cleaned up the unsafe Jos Buttler with his second ball, trying to sweep by exposing his leg-stump and incidentally it was the fourth time in four IPL innings that the Afghan bowler got rid of him. This value is calculated by taking into account the runs that the other Royals batsmen would have scored off those 14 balls, had Samson been dismissed on 58.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium buzzed with the crowd cheering as Rashid removed the "Big fish" for the 4th time in an IPL match. But that soon changed when the 24-year-old Samson struck his second IPL century. A 55-ball unbeaten 102 from any other batsman would have included way more sixes, but Samson had only hit four but had 10 exquisite boundaries to accompany the big hits. Going back to the Sri Lankan tour in July-August in 2017 till the recently-concluded series against Australia, K L Rahul, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina and most recently Ambati Rayudu were tried at that position but without much success.

It was a slow start with Royals scoring 35/1 in the power-play with only three fours hit. Rahane, however, took over the role of the aggressor in the middle overs to set RR up for a late flourish.

Sunrisers needed the quick start if they fancy their chances of eclipsing Rajasthan's imposing 198 for two and Warner and Bairstow just provided that to give the impetus for the rest of the batsmen to follow as the hosts chased down the target in 19 overs. His smart runs conceded did not drop as much, though, by the 16th over the asking rate had already dropped to 6.8, which means the batsmen were in control. Jos Buttler was the first man to go as Rashid Khan bowled him out for 5 off 8.

While Samson continued to make merry and brought up his and season's first hundred, Bhuvneshwar, who is India's key bowlers in the upcoming World Cup, had a night to forget as his last two overs went for 45 runs.

Sunrisers captain Kane Williamson shuffled his bowlers around with even Rashid bowling his four-over quota in three spells!

- The Sunrisers Hyderabad recorded their highest successful chase in the IPL against the Rajasthan Royals. The right-hander creamed 24 runs off the 18th over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, hitting a six and 4 fours to move into the 80s. Hyderabad finished the game at 201-5.
