BBC with reference to the Center for Human Rights in Iran reported that Sotoudeh's husband confirmed her sentence on Facebook, after a brief phone conversation with her from prison.

The new 10-year sentence is the longest of seven different verdicts totalling 33 years bundled together in a case and communicated to Sotoudeh in prison, according to Khandan.

The UN investigator on human rights in Iran, Javaid Rehman, raised Ms Sotoudeh's case at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday and said she "was reportedly convicted of charges relating to her work and could face a lengthy prison sentence".

Renowned Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, who is now in jail in Iran on spying charges, has received a new sentence for 33 years and 148 lashes, according to a Facebook post by her husband.

"Nasrin Sotoudeh must be released immediately and unconditionally and this obscene sentence quashed without delay", he continued.

"Worrying patterns of intimidation, arrest, prosecution, and ill-treatment of human rights defenders, lawyers, and labor rights activists signal an increasingly severe state response", Mr Rehman said.

Rodriguez said he began "shaking" her to rouse her as the couple's daughter implored him to call 911, he told the station. Two days after her death, Rodriguez remembered Flores for her joy of life, her perpetual smile and as a great mother.

"Sotoudeh's sentence is a threat aimed at every human rights advocate in Iran to stop defending human rights".

Before her arrest, Sotoudeh, 55, had taken on the cases of several women arrested for appearing in public without headscarves in protest at the mandatory dress code in force in Iran. The European parliament awarded her the Sakharov human rights prize. She was also banned from practising law for 20 years, before the Lawyers' Court at the Tehran Bar Association overturned the ban on her legal practice in August 2014.

During her time in jail, Sotoudeh staged two hunger strikes in protest against the conditions in Evin and a ban on seeing her son and daughter.

The appointment is seen as weakening the political influence of President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate.

"The global community, notably the European Union, which has an ongoing dialogue with Iran, must take a strong public stand against this disgraceful conviction and urgently intervene to ensure that she is released immediately and unconditionally", he said.
