Nicholas Pooran's career-best half-century was overshadowed by a shoddy West Indies fielding effort yesterday, as England breezed to a four-wicket win in the opening Twenty20 worldwide of the three-match series.

There was also another memorable catch to add to Chris Jordan's scrapbook, an athletic, one-handed caught and bowled accounting for Darren Bravo, while Nicholas Pooran's career-best 58 offered the resistance.

Joe Denly and Sam Billings got England close before both were out.

Jordan was summoned back into the attack to break the stand and duly obliged, completing a brilliant one-handed catch after Bravo was confounded by a short slower ball.

Jonny Bairstow was the star of the England reply, striking an 11-boundary 68 off 40 balls to put England more than halfway to victory.

Leg-spinner Adil Rashid made amends for dropping Hope on the third man boundary off David Willey in the first over of the match with an excellent effort with the ball, conceding just 15 runs off his four overs and claiming the wicket of Brathwaite. Left-arm pacer Sheldon Cottrell was the Caribbean team's most successful bowler with three for 29.

Playing with characteristic abandon, the 23-year-old struck three fours and four sixes while Bravo belted a four and a couple of sixes in a 30-ball stay at the crease. "Obviously, Chris Jordan came back in and bowled really well and Tom Curran ended up with four wickets but I really thought Adil did an incredible job today".

On 127 for six in the 17th over, the Windies innings wandered thereafter as only 33 runs came from the last 19 deliveries, as Curran grabbed two of the three wickets to fall.

In the first of three T20s between the two sides on Tuesday, Eoin Morgan's men were victors, reaching their target with two overs to spare having restricted their hosts to 160/8.

West Indies' errors meant that when Bairstow was eventually caught at deep mid-wicket attacking spinner Ashley Nurse, England were already well ahead of the required run-rate on 103-4 in the 12th over.

England captain Eoin Morgan, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought the bowlers were magnificent".
