NEW DELHI: Opener Usman Khawaja struck his second century of the series to lead Australia to 272-9 in the winner-takes-all fifth one-day global against India on Wednesday.

In reply, India lost Saturday centurion Shikhar Dhawan (12) to Pat Cummins (2-38) early on in their chase.

Rohit Sharma, labouring his way to 56 off 89 balls, saw four of his teammates succumb to Australian bowlers' discipline, before he himself lost focus dancing down the track to Zampa, only to lose his wicket and his bat in the process.

"The resilience and fight that we showed - being down 2-0 it would have been easy to roll over. we've had our backs against the walls for quite a while now, so I'm really proud of the group".

After Aaron Finch had departed for 27, Handscomb helped build a third-wicket stand of 99 with Khawaja, the pair's efforts crucial in getting Australia to what proved a match-winning total.

But, Khawaja's departure to end the 33rd over - out to Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3-48) - derailed the innings, the first of three wickets to fall for seven runs.

Ravindra Jadeja returned to get the risky Glenn Maxwell for one and Handscomb was caught behind off Shami as Australia slipped to 182-4.

The Aussies kept losing regular wickets but Jhye Richardson played a useful cameo of 29 off 21 deliveries before being run out on the final ball of the 50th over.

Cummins got Kumar caught and bowled for 46 and Richardson sent back Jadhav to silence the home crowd.

But it was Stoinis who got Kohli's prized scalp after the star batsman edged a cross-seam delivery to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.

He smashed leg-spinner Zampa for a six but was undone by Lyon, who had the left-hander caught at first slip. Rohit Sharma's 53-run stand with the captain, Kohli (20), briefly calmed nerves in the Indian dressing room before their top order caved in spectacularly.

"They were fearless in the pressure situations compared to our side", Kohli said.

"They were courageous in pressure situations compared to our game, especially in the last three games, the way they handled the pressure, they really deserved to win".

Australia travel to Dubai on Thursday for a five-match ODI series against Pakistan, which will be the final chance for players to impress before selectors name a 15-man World Cup squad.

It was India's last match before the World Cup - which Australia won four years ago - begins in England in May.
