Brazil school shooting

Two gunmen have opened fire at a school in south-eastern Brazil, killing at least six students and two employees, officials say.

The men, identified as former students at the school in a suburb of Sao Paulo, also shot and killed the owner of a used auto business nearby before launching the attack on the school, authorities said.

The age of the attackers was estimated to be between 20 and 25 years old, and authorities don't believe they were former students, the governor said.

Military police Colonel Marcelo Sales said the two attackers "shot at the owner of a gas station", who is now receiving hospital treatment, before entering the school.

He said it was not yet known whether the two assailants were former pupils at the school.

Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world with 64,000 murders in 2017, a rate of nearly 31 per 100,000 inhabitants - that's three times higher than the level the United Nations classifies as endemic violence.

However, current Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro signed a temporary decree in January that made it easier for citizens to buy guns in an effort to overturn the strict regulations of the past.

While gun laws are considered strict in Brazil, it is not hard to illegally purchase a weapon.

It's not the first mass school shooting in Brazil's history.

Security camera footage from the school's entrance published on the website of O Globo newspaper showed Monteiro entering the school around 9:30 a.m. He immediately pulled a pistol out of his jeans and shot into a group of eight students, hitting at least two, who dropped to the floor.

Only secondary students were reportedly at the school at the time of the shooting.

The wounded student could not speak.

Students gathered outside the school recounted harrowing attacks and seeing several bodies lying in pools of blood. "It is the saddest thing I have seen in my life".
