They lost Udoka Azubuike for the season in early January.

The Jayhawks hold the longest streak of winning league titles.

"There'll be a lot of players from the past 14 years that will look at this team that broke what they started, and I don't think that's fair", Self said.

Azubuike getting injured wasn't good for the team, but there's no reason the Jayhawks should have imploded this badly when he went down. If the Jayhawks lose, which is definitely possible considering they only opened as 1-point favorites, Bill Self's team will officially be eliminated from league-title contention and guaranteed to be nothing better than the No. 3 seed in next week's Big 12 Tournament.

Both teams boast a 13-4 record, two games ahead of Kansas' 11-6 mark with one game left in the regular season.

The streak certainly meant something to those that came before them, whether they were one-and-dones like Andrew Wiggins and Josh Jackson or four-year standouts like Frank Mason III.

They were supposed to be one of the oldest and deepest teams in the country. Marcus Garrett scored four points and Lawson two. It didn't help matters that Quentin Grimes has spent the season playing with the confidence of an eighth grader asking his crush to the spring formal. "But I tell our guys all the time that injuries are a part of what many teams go through throughout a season and everybody deals with some adversity or obstacles and the good teams are able to fight through that". "Pretty sharp on both ends of the floor". They haven't won games on the road.

"Bottom line is we just haven't got it done", Self said.

Head coach Bill Self of the Kansas Jayhawks reacts as they take on the Seton Hall Pirates in the first half during the second round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at INTRUST Bank Arena on March 17, 2018 in Wichita, Kansas.

But that should also put into context just how incredible this streak has been.

"We obviously got it handed to us right from the get-go and everything", Self said. That season, Oklahoma State won the title.

Lawson led the Jayhawks in scoring for the fifth-straight game, tallying 18 points and pulling down 11 rebounds for his 19th double-double on the year. In 2015, they won the league despite being forced to play Jamari Traylor at center because Cliff Alexander was their prized recruit.

But this is the first time that it cost them a league title. I swear I thought I'd never live to see the day.

The regular season ends Saturday when Tennessee visits Auburn and LSU hosts Vanderbilt.
