Pair of jeans saves man who became lost at sea

A tourist from Germany survived being knocked overboard and left adrift for hours on the open water off the coast of New Zealand last week - all thanks to his jeans. Images of Murke floating in the water while being rescued have been circulating on the internet.

Since Helge was too far away to fetch him out of the water, Arne chose to quickly engage in a Navy Seals technique, which involved creating a makeshift "life jacket" out of his jeans.

"My brother started directly to get me but the swell was like three meters", he told the New Zealand Herald.

His brother Helge tossed a lifejacket with a rope overboard but Murke couldn't reach it.

"While I was in the water I was just thinking, 'I can't leave my daughter behind without a father.' That was the biggest motivation", Merke said. He tied knots at the end of the legs and inflated it by putting it over water to get some air inside.

"I saw it many years ago and I always thought if I ever go overboard without a life jacket I'm going to do that", he told the publication, adding he wouldn't have survived without the makeshift device.

A motivating factor that kept him going was his 10-month-old daughter, who lives with his girlfriend in the Philippines.

‘He is so incredibly lucky to be alive’: Man uses jeans to save himself from dying at sea

But, this was a challenging task: The water was getting cold and with no sign of rescue in sight, Arne had to re-inflate the jeans to stay afloat.

"Luckily, I knew the trick with the jeans". I managed to somehow get the jeans right and floated again. "Without the jeans I wouldn't be here today, they were really the thing that saved me". "That was one moment where I really thought I might die, if I don't give all my energy", he said.

20 nm off Tolaga Bay, a man had gone overboard from a yacht and through the quick response from our team and other rescue services, we were able to find him.

The lifeguards recorded the rescue in action, and said Mr Murke is "incredibly lucky to be alive".

"Without appropriate communications devices and beacons, it may have turned out differently", Henshaw said.

"I know the risk but I'm not scared of it".
