Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be favourite to be named Manchester United manager next season because he has restored the club's "culture and identity" after being put in caretaker charge, according to former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.

"So it depends if he gets back on the pitch as well in the next few months but he's the captain, a great servant to the club".

"There were probably keepers there better at that time but the belief the manager showed in him with the criticism he got paid dividends".

'David has done fantastic since he came here.

The 25-year-old has won one and drawn two of his three meetings as a Manchester United player, having scored four goals in six games during his time with Everton and one in two with West Bromwich Albion. Then again we've got Sergio (Romero) and Lee (Grant), a fantastic goalkeeper department, I don't think there's any manager in the world who'll beat me in that respect'.

Asked how the Spaniard compares to former favourites such as Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, Solskjaer said: "It's hard to compare them, but Edwin and Peter were never player of the year".

"But my team does not think in that way - we know we can be a good opponent in every stadium for every team, if we are very organised, as we showed against Chelsea (a 0-0 draw) for example, where it is not easy to take a point".

"David's contributed so many points over the years for us and I would say he's the best goalkeeper in the world. Such a humble and confident boy".

The Old Trafford futures of both players has been questioned but, in the absence of Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, and with Marcus Rashford held back on the bench, the pair were tasked with providing the attacking threat Solskjaer hoped would ensure his side strengthened their bid for a place in next season's Champions League.

Demands around the deal are understood to have held things up as talks continue with De Gea, and Solskjaer said: "No updates from me on that one".

"I am positive - we had a very important win on Wednesday and now we go with not much pressure, because nobody expects something from us". "It might just be a few more days before he's ready", he said. It's about getting back to winning ways at home.

Making him permanent sooner rather than later would be wise because it would allow United to start planning for the summer transfer window.
