Manfred says Bryce Harper can’t recruit Mike Trout (for now)

Yesterday we wrote about Bryce Harper saying, "If you think I'm not going to call Mike Trout in 2020 to have him come to Philly, you're insane".

"We've been in touch with Major League Baseball and we have no further comment at this time", Angels general manager Billy Eppler said on Tuesday, according to Maria Torres of the Los Angeles Times.

Speaking on a Philadelphia radio station earlier Tuesday, Harper made it clear he would do his part to recruit Trout once the two-time AL MVP hits free agency after the 2020 season.

It's respecting Mike Trout in a certain way during the season and letting him play and do the things he needs to do to of course be Mike Trout, but if you don't think I'm gonna call Mike Trout in 2020 to have him come to Philly, you're insane. Harper told team owner John Middleton he's willing to help the team recruit free agents and sell them on playing for a victor in Philadelphia.

It was a totally understandable and obvious thing for Harper to say because (a) Mike Trout is unbelievable; (b) Philly loves Mike Trout and there are lots of reasons to believe Mike Trout will want to go to Philly when he's a free agent; and (c) Bryce Harper is going to be in Philly for the next 13 years and only a certifiably insane person would not want Mike Trout as a teammate. This is where the fans are great, ownership understands it, our manager is awesome.' I can really put that faith in myself and being able to say we're gonna go about it the right way, we're the Philadelphia Phillies and we want whoever wants to come to Philly.

The Celtics rallied behind their reserves, with Jaylen Brown posting 15 points and six rebounds off the bench to lead the charge. In Detroit, Blake Griffin scored 14 of his 27 points in the first quarter and the Pistons outlasted Toronto .

"For me, I can be able to talk to Trout, or whoever it is, big-name free agent or whoever wants to come to Philly or is thinking about coming to Philly, I can say 'Hey, this is the place to be".

"If you don't want to come to Philly, then don't come". Don't be part of it.

"If I didn't mean it, I wouldn't have said it", he told reporters.

"I'm making $26 (million) a year".

Despite passing on Harper and Manny Machado (10 years and $300 million from the San Diego Padres), New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was aggressive with building the team's bullpen, rounding out the starting rotation and adding middle infielder depth. "There's another guy in about two years that comes off the books". "We'll see what happens with him". In Trout's eight seasons with the Angels, he's appeared in just three postseason games.
