Yellow warnings are in place for both snow and ice.

The strong northwesterly winds are expected to strike at midnight on Wednesday and last until about 3pm.

The Met Office says some travel disruption from the snow is likely from early in the morning and that some roads and railways are likely to be affected.

They also warn of "some short term loss of power".

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri said: "In what is a windy and blustery weekend with gusts in a few locations already having exceeded 50 miles per hour we can expect a short spell of gusts quiet widely between 50 and 55 miles per hour across southern England early on Sunday".

"Widespread frosty start for many of us and there is further unsettled weather to come through the day".

Weekend Weather Takes A Turn As UK Forecasts Snow And Strong Winds

"A band of rain, sleet and snow, accompanied by gusty winds, will move eastwards across Northern Ireland during the early hours of Sunday and then continue into Scotland and parts of northern England", the Met Office confirmed.

Another day, another report of extreme weather heading straight for us - this time it's apparently snow, sleet and strong winds, which are set to hit the United Kingdom and send the country into meltdown.

"Icy patches are also likely to develop on untreated surfaces as rain, sleet and snow clears, most likely over Northern Ireland".

Most of the "wintriness" will "be confined to the hills" but Britons could see some of the white stuff falling at lower levels, according to Ms Creed. Southern parts of the United Kingdom will be mainly dry with sunny spells.

"We are talking gusts of 40-45mph inland in the south in around the south west coast we could see gusts of up to 65mph". Elsewhere, a mixture of sunshine and blustery showers, some wintry.
