The water molecules recorded by LAMP likely accumulated over time on the surface of the Moon instead of "raining" down.

Nasa administrator - Jim Bridenstine - was a guest on a USA science and technology radio show Science Friday, when he made the comment.

Almost 50 years have passed since NASA collected samples of the Moon during the Apollo missions of the late 1960s and 1970s. Expedition 59 - scheduled for March 29 - includes astronauts Anne McClain and Christina Koch, aided on the ground by flight directors Mary Lawrence and Kristen Facciol at NASA's Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. NASA didn't specifically plan it as an "all-woman spacewalk", but things just kind of shook out that way, and as NASA's ranks are inching closer to an even split between male and female astronauts, some are wondering about how that might affect upcoming trips to the Moon and eventually Mars.

"NASA is committed to making sure we have a broad and diverse set of talent", Bridenstine said. According to the agency, women now make up 34 percent of NASA's active astronauts. The spaceship became the first commercial spacecraft to dock at the International Space Station.

NASA's Stephanie Schierholz told Space.com: 'It really is the luck of the draw.

The first six women joined NASA's Astronaut Corps in 1978, making up almost 10 per cent of the active astronaut corps.

Happy National Women's Month, indeed.

That's where the Space Launch System, or SLS, comes in. "At $21 billion, this budget represents a almost 6 percent increase over last year's request and comes at a time of constrained resources across the federal government".

"These results aid in understanding the lunar water cycle and will ultimately help us learn about accessibility of water that can be used by humans in future missions to the moon", she said.

NASA is pushing for a sustainable moon program this time around, as opposed to the come-and-go Apollo lunar landings a half-century ago. While NASA is optimistic about the budget, it spells significant delays and terminations for a number of the agency's projects, including the development of a new Space Launch System.

This first mission coming up - essentially a three-week test flight - would carry no crew and would not land.

Construction on Gateway - an orbiting lunar outpost - is expected to begin construction as soon as 2022.
