US House Democrats Struggling over Rebuke to Lawmaker for Israel Comments

"I don't think our colleague is anti-Semitic", Pelosi said Friday, reiterating her previous defenses of Omar.

President Trump condemned the vote in remarks outside the White House Friday morning, calling Democrats "an anti-Israel [and] anti-Jewish party".

She continued, "And you know being able to mobilize progressive leaders across the country to sign on to a letter to organize a press conference in support of Ilhan Omar to call on the Democratic leadership to actually expand the language of the resolution to include condemning all forms of bigotry because that's the kind of movement we're apart of".

"The lesson that history teaches is that we have an obligation to stand up to anti-Semitic hate".

Omar joined the two other Muslims in Congress, Rashida Tlaib and Andre Carson, in praising the measure's passage.

She continued: "Our nation is having a hard conversation and we believe this is great progress".

US House Democrats Struggling over Rebuke to Lawmaker for Israel Comments

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said it was a "disgrace" that Democrats passed a resolution in the House this week condemning all forms of hatred - and not singularly antisemitism - after Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota questioned the loyalties and patriotism of Israel advocates.

Pelosi declined to condemn Omar outright. "Having said that, I've read some of her other tweets..."

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former congressman, nevertheless slammed Omar and described her dual loyalty charge as anti-Semitic, not anti-Israel.

The expansion of the resolution to broadly address hate did not sit well with some lawmakers. Several Democratic presidential contenders, including Senators Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, issued cautionary statements wary of Pelosi's resolution process and critical of efforts to "stifle" legitimate debate over Israel policy.

"If she thinks the only reason that Americans support Israel is because of AIPAC and campaign contributions, she is dead wrong", he wrote. That earned clap backs from Democrats who pointed to his equivocal remarks after a deadly 2017 neo-Nazi protest in Charlottesville.
