New Zealand Crush Bangladesh By An Innings After Trent Boult Bags Five

The Black Caps have climbed to second in the test rankings

When Bangladesh resumed Sunday on 174 for four they faced a Herculean task to score a further 307 just to make New Zealand bat again.

Kane Williamson scored his second test century as the Black Caps demoralised Bangladesh with a dominant display of batting.

BJ Watling matched the New Zealand test record (201) for wicketkeeper dismissals when catching the risky Tamim Iqbal (74) off Tim Southee, leaving Soumya Sarkar (39) and captain Mahmudullah (15) to resume on day four.

The remaining five wickets lasted only 18 overs.

The Black Caps also bettered their previous highest test total of 690 set against Pakistan in Sharjah in November, 2014.

The match had belonged to New Zealand long before they declared their first innings at a colossal 715 for six - a first innings lead of 481 - but Soumya and Mahmudullah were determined to make crossing the finish line as hard as possible for the hosts.

Black Caps captain Kane Williamson scored his test 20th century early on day three in Hamilton.

Jeet Raval (51) and Tom Latham (35), then took New Zealand to 86 without loss at stumps to leave Bangladesh ruing their inability to capitalise on a superb century by Tamim Iqbal or handle the short-pitched bowling of Neil Wagner.

Colin de Grandhomme smashed 76 from 53 balls to accelerate New Zealand's above 700. That stand came to an end after the break though, Watling caught behind for 31 off the bowling of Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

It was his second highest score behind an unbeaten 242 against Sri Lanka in 2015.

With that record done, Williamson batted on in style, eventually reaching his second Test match double century, pulling Abu Jayed for four out past deep square leg, getting to the milestone from 257 balls, with 19 boundaries.

Williamson was 200 not out as New Zealand posted a colossal 481-run lead when they called the innings off midway through day three in Hamilton.

Watling, who was initially a top-order batsman and part-time wicketkeeper when he first made it into the New Zealand side in 2009, moved one behind Adam Parore's national record as the hosts bowled Bangladesh out for 234 early in the final session.
