Nick Kyrgios defeats Rafal Nadal

Rafael Nadal accused Nick Kyrgios of lacking respect "for the public, the opponent and himself" after a stormy defeat to the Australian firebrand at the Mexico Open.

The former world number one passed up three match points before going down 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (8-6) in an enthralling encounter in Acapulco on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old claimed he was considering retiring after the first set because of nausea but carried on because he did not want to deal with the reaction. Kyrgios then served it out.

'He is a player who has enormous talent, ' Nadal said afterwards, as reported by ESPN. He could win grand slams and fight for the top positions of the ranking, but there is a reason why he is where he is.

"I do not think he is a bad person, I think he is a good person, but he lacks respect for the crowd, the rival and towards himself".

Kyrgios complained of feeling unwell after the first set, which Nadal won 6-3 on Cancha Central.

Criticised for a perceived lack of effort in some matches this year, Kyrgios stayed focused after giving up the opening set. "He doesn't know the journey I have been on, he doesn't know anything about me", said Kyrgios who famously stunned Nadal as a teenager at Wimbledon in 2014.

"Don't doubt yourself, there are plenty of people who will do that for you".

He added: "I'm gonna try to play a couple of more games".

Kyrgios levelled his head-to-head record with Nadal at 3-3, and will play three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka for a place in the semi-finals.

Isner eliminated compatriot Sam Querrey 6-4 6-4. Rafa has earned his 925th ATP win following a solid 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Mischa Zverev in 80 minutes, scoring the third win over the experienced German and the second here in Acapulco after 2017.

Federer will face Hungary's Marton Fucsovics next after the world number 35 beat Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany 6-4 6-2.

The top seed also fell in the women's event, with Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia beating Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-3 for her first victory in seven career matches against players ranked in the top 10.

Wawrinka beat seventh-seeded Steve Johnson 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

Kyrgios set up a quarterfinal match against Stan Wawrinka, a 7-6 (5), 6-4 victor over seventh-seeded Steve Johnson in the hardcourt event at The Princess Mundo Imperial.
