Met Éireann issues three new weather warnings as Ireland braces itself for Storm Gareth

This warning kicks in from Tuesday, March 12 at 12:00 to Wednesday, March 13 at 09:00.

A status orange wind warning has been issued for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo. Rain spreading across southern parts, with hill snow for central areas, and perhaps to lower levels here later in the night.

Forecasters say that gusts of up to 80mph could cause travel disruption and power cuts in Northern Ireland, northern England, Wales and Scotland.

Wind speeds are considered hurricane strength after reaching speeds of 70 miles per hour.

The storm was officially named by the Irish Meteorological Service this morning, the Met Office has announced.

A strong jet stream is continuing to speed across the Atlantic with deep areas of low pressure moving close to the United Kingdom bringing the periods of windy weather.

The Environment Agency has warned of floods from heavy rain and big waves.

Blustery or windy early this morning in Leinster with heavy showers, some wintry in north Leinster.

It will be dry in many parts with sunny spells; however, a few showers will occur, chiefly in parts of the west and north.

"A squally cold front will move eastwards across the region between 10am-2pm, after which both the winds and temperature will drop markedly".

Periods of heavy rain are also expected in Devon and Cornwall on Thursday and Friday, but no weather warning has yet been issued.
