NY Prosecutors Indict Manafort on Mortgage-Fraud Charges

Paul Manafort returns to court for another sentencing

The sentence followed a scathing assessment by the judge and a prosecutor of Manafort's crimes. "It is evidence that something is wrong with sort of a moral compass".

The 69-year-old, who arrived in court in a wheelchair, said he was the primary caregiver of his wife and wanted the chance for them to resume their life together.

He added, "T$3 he miscarriage of justice, as I've called it repeatedly, really occurred in the Eastern District of Virginia, not today in her courtroom".

Manafort was convicted of bank and tax fraud in the Virginia case and pleaded guilty in Washington to two conspiracy counts, each punishable by up to five years in prison.

But she agreed with Judge T.S. Ellis in Alexandria, Virginia, that sentencing guidelines in the case were excessive.

The breadth of Manafort's criminal activity - and his own written agreement with prosecutors - led to a recommended sentence double that amount.

The charges against Manafort, who once served as U.S. President Donald Trump's campaign manager, include residential mortgage fraud and attempted residential mortgage fraud, conspiracy, scheming to defraud and falsifying business records.

It was the second such sentencing he faced in the space of a week, when he was handed a surprisingly lenient four-year prison sentence imposed for tax and bank fraud in a separate case.

During the same hearing, the judge also appeared to allude to another possible interaction at the Havana Room gathering: a handoff by Manafort of internal polling data from Trump's presidential campaign to his Russian associate.

The political environment since Manafort's indictment has been "very harsh", attorney Kevin Downing told the judge. In all, Manafort will spend around seven-and-a-half years in jail for a variety of crimes related to consulting work he did in Ukraine prior to joining the Trump campaign.

A New Orphan Black Series May Be on the Way
It has not yet been confirmed if the new series will air on multiple networks as Orphan Black aired on BBC America in the U.S. Instead, it will reportedly be a new show with new characters that takes place in the same universe as Orphan Black .

The judge ruled earlier this year that Manafort breached his plea deal by lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, prosecutors and grand jurors during more than 50 hours of interviews.

"I believe that is not reflective of someone who has learned a harsh lesson".

"The "no collusion" mantra is simply a non sequitur that does not bear on the question of the appropriate sentence", she said.

She added 43 months to the 47 months he already received, making the total 90 months. They have also said the case does not prove that the campaign worked with Russian Federation to help Trump win the election.

"Court is one of those places where facts still matter", Jackson said.

Manafort is one of several high-profile individuals in Trump's orbit who have now been ensnared by Mueller's investigation.

Manafort's criminal prosecution has led to several related criminal cases and investigations and a multimillion-dollar Justice Department settlement with a United States law firm for illegal lobbying for Ukraine. But he reached Mueller's team, and pled guilty to two counts of conspiracy.

During Wednesday's hearing, Jackson ruled that Manafort should get a tougher sentence because he acted in a leadership role, directing others to participate in a crime.

Ms Jackson sentenced Manafort, a veteran Republican political operative who earned millions of dollars working for pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine, for two conspiracy charges to which he pleaded guilty in September 2018 in Washington.

This is a developing story.
