Dr Nicola Smith, GP and Chair of NHS Milton Keynes CCG, said: "Let's all sock it to eating disorders because there is help available for anyone who may be experiencing an eating disorder, including counselling and therapy, as well as a dedicated helpline run by the charity Beat". A family history of eating disorders, other mental illness or stress and dieting can all put you at increased risk of developing an eating disorder at any time in your life. "All eating disorders require similar treatment in that it isn't just one factor to focus on and is multifactorial requiring a supportive treatment team", Savoy tells me.

Mental health experts are highlighting the importance of the early diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders, and the fact that young, white females aren't the only demographic affected by the potentially fatal disease. "People like myself are not confident in seeking help for eating disorders because this is something not talked about in our communities".

"Some people with eating disorders may have no appreciable or noticeable weight loss, but still have an eating disorder and that needs to be tackled and tackled now".

One person dies every 62 minutes as a direct result of an eating disorder. Or, in helping someone else, it may take more than one conversation. Recovery is so damn hard everyday, it's full of ups and downs and the eating disorder voice can be completely relentless at times.

Whilst many of these have been diagnosed and are receiving treatment, many more remain undiagnosed and at risk of their eating disorder becoming progressively worse and leading to a whole host of distressing symptoms and long-term problems.

She also wants to challenge the belief that an individual is defined by their eating disorder.

It's usually a good idea to make an appointment with your primary care physician as well, depending on the severity and duration of the disordered behaviors. They are a serious and complex illness that are incredibly hard to treat and overcome.

Phillips said that Patton's talk motivated her to "to use my privilege to build and bring other people up".

An individual may develop an eating disorder for a number of reasons, but researchers believe genetic, societal, familial, and environmental factors all contribute.

According to Beat, about 1.25 million people in the United Kingdom have an eating disorder.

MYTH: You can tell who has an eating disorder by looking at them.

For certain eating disorders, for example binge eating disorder, over half of these people will never receive any formal treatment. You may have even dined with them and not noticed anything unusual.

"I want my teammates and others to know that health and mental health comes first", Leisher said.

Plus, different types of eating disorders can have different effects on the body.

Myth no. 3: Anorexia nervosa is a more serious disorder than bulimia nervosa. Additionally, individuals with bulimia nervosa typically restrict their food intake to the same amount as those with anorexia nervosa.

People with eating disorders may silently struggle with fears, paranoia, or compulsions about food or body image. The anxiety surrounding foods may be acutely disturbing, and it may lead to thoughts and behaviors around food that appear irrational to an observer.

Treatment involves not just restoring a healthy relationship with food, but addressing the deeper issues the individual is experiencing. People with anorexia tend to be perfectionistic and desire to have high levels of control.

College students with eating disorders often struggle and suffer alone, alienating themselves from friends and "obsessing", as Samantha Phillips '21 said, "about food or body checking".
