Pentagon reviewing Elon Musk’s security clearance

Elon Musk's SpaceX Pentagon Security Clearance Under Review

However, Musk, who is also the CEO of electric carmaker Tesla Inc, has made a reapplication for the SF-86 security form, which requires a federal employee or contractor seeking a clearance to acknowledge any illegal drug use over the previous seven years, according to the Bloomberg report, which said the review has not impacted SpaceX and SpaceX declined to comment on the issue at hand.

Now, Musk holds a security clearance because his company SpaceX provides satellite launch services to the United States government, but after the Marijuana smoking controversy, it has been put under scrutiny. SpaceX's day-to-day operations are run by President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell.

But the refiling and review underscore the continuing ramifications from the chief executive officer's decision a year ago to smoke marijuana on the podcast, which quickly went viral. But last September, Musk's appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast caused issues with the government after Musk sipped whiskey and smoked marijuana on the show. Government officials note that Musk has also re-submitted paperwork to the federal government for security clearance which suggests he has updated this paperwork to reflect his marijuana use.

Following news that Elon Musk may be in it again with the Securities and Exchange Commission for firing off a bad tweet, Bloomberg reported Friday that a group of institutional investors in Musk's electric auto company Tesla are suing to bar Musk from tweeting over "repeated misstatements" (and presumably all of the other unsavoury stuff) that they claim hurt shareholders and Tesla. He also watched SpaceX launch a new spacecraft created to ferry humans into orbit. It seems unlikely a security clearance review will bother him too much.

Second Brexit meaningful vote: timeline of events this week
May's office says talks are continuing to try to secure changes to the deal that can win over opponents in Parliament. The meaningful vote on the PM's Brexit deal will happen on Tuesday, but it is widely anticipated MPs will reject it.

Musk is at risk of having his security clearance suspended or revoked according to officials.

"For privacy and security reasons, we do not publicly discuss individual clearance status", said Lieutenant Colonel Mike Andrews, a Pentagon spokesman.

Nevertheless, there can be serious consequences for breaching security protocols.
