Philipp Kohlschreiber sends pale Novak Djokovic packing — ATP Indian Wells

Djokovic, Nishikori, Halep ousted at Indian Wells

The display of emotion didn't change anything as Kohlschreiber opened the second set with a service break and broke Djokovic again in the seventh game to give himself a chance to serve for the match. The unseeded German knocked off the five-time tournament champion 6-4, 6-4.

The 67th-ranked Hurkacz needed just over two hours to complete the comeback win over the 2014 U.S. Open finalist in the Southern California desert city of Indian Wells. Osaka fired her coach and lost in the first round in Dubai before taking on a new coach, Jermaine Jenkins.

The bottom half of the men's draw still includes No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal and fourth-seeded Roger Federer, both of whom breezed to victory. "I know from that point on it's gonna be a very interesting match".

The Serb, who now holds three of the four Grand Slam titles, was beaten 6-4 6-4 by the German world number 39.

Kohlschreiber's win over Djokovic was also his first career win over a top-ranked player, and he will look to continue his success against France's Gael Monfils in the fourth round. Then it was Kohlschreiber's turn to show some nerves, a sudden spate of four errors, including a double fault, giving Djokovic a break.

"I haven't played that much, so I wanted to make it count, " said Williams, who expects to play about 12 tournaments this year.

Elsewhere, Canadian 19-year-old Denis Shapovalov rapped on court in his post-match interview after beating Croatian 10th seed seed Marin Cilic.
