Malaysia: 111 Schools Shut After Chemical Leak Poisonings

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on Thursday that the situation in an area of the southern Johor state was under control, after hundreds of people fell sick due to chemical pollution.

According to investigators' initial reports, a truck is believed to have dumped toxic waste in southern Johor state last week, releasing risky fumes over a large area and causing widespread poisoning symptoms such as nausea and vomiting among the population.

"(And) those mobilised to contain the situation must also be prepared to handle the problem", he told reporters after visiting victims of the crisis who have been admitted to the Sultan Ismail Hospital here yesterday.

Meanwhile, when asked about the court action to be taken against the suspects, Dr Mahathir said there must be strong evidence before the prosecution can begin their case. There is no need for any evacuation, but we must be careful.

He also said that as Lotte Chemical Titan has vast experience in chemical incidents, it is willing to help in the clean-up once the type of chemical that caused the pollution has been identified.

"We take note of that, usually we face water or solid-based contamination, but this is gas contamination, something we have not dealt with".

Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Deputy Minister Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis said that there are 29 investigators in six teams from Johor investigating the 200-odd factories found in Pasir Gudang.

Earlier, Dr Mahathir and Dr Wan Azizah were briefed by the state disaster management committee on the cleanup of Sungai Kim Kim, where the chemicals that emitted the toxic fumes were illegally dumped.
