Police 11-year-old charged in connection with baby's death

An 11-year-old girl has been charged with first-degree child abuse of a baby who was left in her care February 24. Brian Reilly, commander of the Criminal Investigation Division for the Prince George's County police.

The alleged attack happened on February 24 in Suitland, Maryland after the mother of the girl left Paxton Davis, the infant killed, with her daughter while she ran an errand.

According to local authorities, the family watching the infant and the family of the 11-year-old were friends.

When family members returned, Reilly says they found the injured boy and called 911. The family was friendly with Paxton's family and the child had been to the home before, police said. He was rushed to Children's National Medical Center in Washington.

"Our investigation reveals that our respondent, in this case an 11-year-old girl, had sole care and custody of the 1-year-old, and when our detectives interviewed her, she admitted that she assaulted Paxton - and ultimately the injuries that she caused resulted in his death", he said at press conference. He was taken to a hospital with severe injuries to his upper body and hospital staff alerted police. "I don't know what motive there would be in a situation like this for an 11-year-old to intentionally inflict injuries on a 1-year-old".

Citing the ongoing probe, Reilly would not say how long the 11-year-old was left alone with Paxton other than that it was "very brief".

Detectives spoke to the girl at length, but it's not clear why it happened, Reilly said.

In the state of Maryland, you have to be at least 13 to watch another child, police said.

"In my time, I'm not aware of somebody this young being charged with this serious of an offense out of our homicide unit", Reilly said. "There is no reason for this to take place".

However, the girl reportedly confessed to the assault, the Washington Post reported. The girl was a foster child living at a home that also served as a day care. The suspect's mother left Davis in the care of her daughter prior to the assault.
