Public health officials in Toronto are sounding the alarm after someone with a lab-confirmed case of the measles went to Vaughan Mills shopping mall on March 20.

Officials say an adult who contracted the measles while travelling overseas was in the mall that day between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily to those who are susceptible.

Provincial health officials recommend two doses of measles vaccine for children.

This is the second time this month the agency has issued a public warning about a measles case. "As a result, we know that now is a good time to remind residents to check their immunization status as many people have recently travelled overseas for March Break vacations", Dr. Eileen de Villa said in a statement. If you are unsure, please check with your health care provider.

The measles virus is circulating in several countries and anyone travelling overseas should make sure they're protected against the virus before departure, the release said. Anyone born before 1970 is considered protected against the virus.

The authority is now asking people who may have been exposed to measles to monitor for symptoms including fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, diarrhea and red eyes. The vaccine can prevent infection if given to subject within three days of exposure.
