News Corp's Australian arm calls for Google breakup

In an 80-page submission largely centered on Google, News Corp Australia said the USA company had created an "ecosystem" where it could control the results of people's internet searches and then charge advertisers based on how many people viewed their advertisements, Reuters reports.

RUPERT Murdoch's News Corp has called for Google to be broken up in Australia, the latest salvo in a battle between the corporate media giants.

"News Corp Australia considers that divestment is necessary in the case of Google, due to the unparalleled power that it now exerts over news publishers and advertisers alike", the publisher says. Sign-up now and enjoy one (1) week free access!

Google would not comment on the submissions by Oracle and News Corp Australia, the publisher of this masthead.

Oracle also said Google's personal data download feature, called "Takeout" omitted "entire categories of other data collected by Google".

"The digital platforms are having a profound effect on the Australian media's ability to adequately fund the ongoing quality production of news and premium content", Nine said.

The regulatory body has recommended in a draft proposal for the government to establish an overseeing body which would manage how Google and other companies like Facebook rank ads and news articles - requiring them to unveil their algorithms.

News Corp told the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission at an inquiry into digital platforms that Google's "overwhelming" market power no longer leaves room for digital publishers to compete with it for advertising.

News Corp previously supported the European Union taking action against Google in 2017, when the European Union fined Google more than $1 billion for unfairly promoting its own price comparison services above those of its competitors.

On Tuesday, the Interactive Advertising Bureau released figures for online advertising in the country, showing that the spend had grown to $8.8 billion in 2018. She posted ads for her campaign with said message on Facebook and the company took them down.

"The inquiry should focus on competition issues arising from the identified market power of digital platforms in the markets for media and advertising services, in particular in relation to the supply of news and journalistic content, as per the terms of reference", it said.

"Any solution must be bold", the company said in its submission.

"Similarly, preventing the default installation of the Google Chrome browser on devices and Google Search within browsers is unlikely to have a significant impact on Google's entrenched market power in online search".
