Police work at the scene of a shooting at a school in Suzano, Sao Paulo metropolitan region, Brazil.

At least eight people, including six children and two school officials, were killed in a shooting at a school in Brazil on Wednesday.

The age of the attackers was estimated to be between 20 and 25 years old, and authorities don't believe they were former students, the governor said.

Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world with 64,000 murders in 2017, a rate of nearly 31 per 100,000 inhabitants - that's three times higher than the level the United Nations classifies as endemic violence.

Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro made relaxing gun control a cornerstone of his campaign past year.

Marilene Gonçalves, a 51-year-old housewife, said she saw children fleeing the school, and that she gave safe harbour to several, including one boy who was shot in the jaw.

Doria said the school had been evacuated and police were inspecting what appeared to be possible explosives left by the shooters.

Gun laws are extremely strict in Brazil, but it is not hard to illegally purchase a weapon.

The attack was carried out by two "armed and hooded" teenagers, according to police.

"I heard a lot of screaming", she said.

The public school, Raul Brasil Professor, has more than 1,600 students from elementary to high school grades, teachers gathered outside said.

The last major school shooting in Brazil occurred in 2011, when 12 students in Rio de Janeiro were shot dead by a gunman.

"We can't let those who take advantage of this tragedy speak about how disarmament is the solution", he tweeted, adding: "Weak and shameful 'disarmament farce, ' which gave guns to criminals and prevented self-defence".

"It's a very sad scene, the saddest thing I've seen in my entire life".
