The team traded its three top scorers for younger players and draft picks before Monday's trade deadline after the Senators couldn't come to terms with pending free agents Mark Stone, Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel on new deals.

The Senators will conduct a search for a new head coach after the season ends, Dorion said. Originally Dorion said the organization would evaluate its needs after the season had ended, but following Ottawa's 4-2 loss to Edmonton on Thursday, he chose to act sooner. Assistant coach Marc Crawford has been named interim head coach.

Ottawa Senators head coach Guy Boucher looks on during a game against the Florida Panthers, at the BB&T Center, in Sunrise, Fla., on November 11, 2018.

Crawford, 58, is a Stanley Cup winning coach, and is in his third season as a member of the Senators coaching staff. Dorion gave Boucher a vote of confidence following Monday's trade deadline.

"I've probably made his job pretty hard the last few weeks, and we're going to support him", Dorion said Monday.

"I told them that our play recently wasn't acceptable", Dorion said, according to TSN's Frank Seravalli.

Calloway said the most important thing to him is providing an opportunity to those with talent and potential. The 5'7 164-pound safety is no stranger to competing against the odds.

Players admitted the timing of Boucher's firing was somewhat surprising with just 18 games remaining in the regular season, but at the same time don't want to just be going through the motions in the final five weeks and that change might not be a bad thing.

Ottawa missed the playoffs last season after making an early trade to acquire Duchene in an effort to improve their playoff chances. The Senators sent a first-round pick to the Avalanche in the deal and now that selection could be first overall this year.

For now, Dorion expects his players to compete to win and not just ride out a lost season.

Coach Jon Cooper has been head coach of the Lightning since March 25, 2013, when he replaced Boucher (who was Tampa Bay's coach from 2010-2013).

Crawford, 58, has 15 years of National Hockey League head coaching experience with four franchises, including seven seasons behind the bench of the Vancouver Canucks from 1999 to 2006. He has previously coached in Colorado, Vancouver, Dallas and Los Angeles. He will take over as head coach starting with Saturday's game at Tampa Bay.
