Spain's Nursing 'House of Horrors' Reveals Deceit of Elders

Elderly victims were freed by police

In an operation police dubbed Teydea, an elderly German man and a Dutch woman were found in a "terrible state", locked up, drugged and fed with stomach tubes.

A German man called Silvestre and a disabled Dutch woman in her seventies, identified as Elisabeth, were found immobile on beds inside small rooms, showing signs of being drugged with tranquilisers and suffering from malnutrition.

The seemingly natural death of a 101-year German woman in Chiclana (Cadiz) in the south of Spain sparked an investigation after an alert from Interpol. They have been taken to another nursing home, where their condition has improved considerably.

"During the arrest of the couple and in a search of the villa, police found two aeroplane tickets to Cuba with a reservation for the Hotel Melia Varadero, which would have made it hard for them to look after Maria if she had still been alive".

An investigation found that a Cuban-German couple, who have not yet been officially named, had befriended Babes in Tenerife and brought her to southern Spain "so that they could control her better". She died in their auto, and the suspects immediately had her cremated.

POLICE in Spain have arrested a couple who they believe handcuffed, drugged and fleeced foreign residents out of nearly €2million of savings while offering "care services".

"In October, she had more than €162,000 in the bank and after this couple appeared in her life, by mid-December she had under €300, her house in Tenerife had been sold and she didn't receive one euro of the sale", the Civil Guard said in a statement.

But before police managed to detain them, they said the two came to the care home and took Babes away. Five hours later, she was dead.

Finland's cabinet quits over failure to deliver healthcare reform
Sipila's center-right government resigned Friday after failing to push through a planned social and health reform. He said he listened to his "inner voice".

"The death was unusual given that that morning a video was shot showing her in perfectly good health and playing the tambourine during Christmas breakfast in the home", the Guardia Civil said in a statement.

The couple are accused of crimes including fraud, misappropriation, domestic abuse and money laundering.

After their detention, police searched the couple's home in Chiclana and found they had another house rented out nearby.

Among the six arrested were a Cuban woman and a man with Cuban and German citizenship. Police said the couple had used the same technique to take advantage of other vulnerable people.

Four other seniors who were "cared for" in the Cadiz nursing home did not survive their stay there.

The arrested couple allegedly laundered the money which they stole by building a tourist complex in a coastal town in Cadiz province.

Police arrested four other people suspected of helping the couple launder their money.

The Guardia Civil said they had asked officials in Britain, Italy, Germany and Cuba to check if the arrested couple had bank accounts or financial products in those countries.
